Totally Turtle

This is all very new to me but I am keen to get to know plenty more as I have just started at Great Lakes Library Service a few months ago as the Children's Services Officer. I have been working towards setting up the programs and events for the year.

I thought if I really get the hang of this blogging I could create all sorts of fab things.

The logo for the Great Lakes Library Service is a turtle. Therefore the programs are now Tiny Turtles - baby bounce or lapsit equivalent due to start next term on 1st May 2008 and Turtletime - storytime rebadged for pre-schoolers. I have set up a database and encourage children of all ages to take a registration form and get mum or dad to complete it and sign it. I have included photo permission on the form.

I have just finished a newsletter called Turtle Talk and have sent to everyone on the mailing list.

We have a Turtle Club which is for children aged 5 - 12 years of age. We have scheduled the first gathering for 18 March 2008 and will go with an easter theme. After a bit of a chat and demo of the new item stand we will get straight into some easter craft for about 1/2 hour. We will follow on with an egg spinning competition. Longest spin wins and then weather permitting we will head out into the front garden for an egg and spoon race. Some choccie treats, a cool drink and some biscuits. We hope to hold a couple of gatherings per term. Our aim is to encourage children into the library and make it a memorable experience. This will also give the kids an opportunity to see how much we have to offer.

We are also establishing a Youth Database which is travelling a little slower. We have a Pizza and Pages night scheduled for 10 April 2008 which coincides with Youth Week. The agenda is not established as yet but we are hoping the participants will take some ownership and perhaps get involved maybe by adding to this so far very lame blog.

I will send a birthday card to all the children who are registered.

The newsletter is also a great way to advertise school holiday programs and poetry or writing competitions.
